What's the recovery like for Face Lift?

Everything you need to know about Face Lift recovery — timeline, tips, what to avoid, and when to call your provider.

Typical downtime: 3–4 weeks of social downtime — numbness and an alarming tightness can last months

Recovery timeline

Days 1–3

Significant swelling and bruising, a head dressing, and possibly drains. The big surprises: your face feels intensely tight, almost too tight, and your ears and cheeks feel numb. Both are normal. You cannot open your mouth wide. Rest with your head elevated.

Week 1

Drains removed. Bruising and swelling are significant and most people are not presentable. Gentle walking only. The tightness can feel scary — it is swelling plus the lifted tissue, and it eases.

Week 2

Most sutures out. Bruising fading. Many return to desk work with concealment. Numbness of the ears and cheeks continues — this can last weeks to months.

Weeks 3–4

Presentable in most situations. Tightness and numbness persist but improve. The face often looks worse before it looks better as deep swelling lingers; the true result emerges over the following months as scars mature.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my face feel so tight after a facelift?
Swelling combined with the newly lifted and tightened tissue creates an intense, sometimes alarming tightness in the first weeks. It is normal and eases steadily as swelling resolves over the following weeks to months.
Is numbness in my ears and cheeks normal?
Yes — numbness of the ears, cheeks, and neck is one of the most common after-effects and reflects normal nerve healing. It can take weeks to several months to fully resolve.
Why do I look worse before I look better?
Bruising and deep swelling peak in the first weeks and hide the result. Most people do not see their true outcome until swelling subsides over 1 to 3 months, with scars maturing over a year.
