Recovery timeline

Days 1-3

The face is significantly swollen and can look lumpy and overfilled, this is expected and not the result. Bruising is common. The donor area where fat was taken is sore and bruised and usually wears a compression garment. Sleep with your head elevated.

Days 4-7

Swelling starts to ease but the face still looks fuller than the final outcome. Light activity is fine. Most people are not yet camera-ready, and that is normal.

Weeks 2-3

Visible bruising resolves and the swelling continues down. No strenuous exercise until your surgeon clears it, usually in this window. The donor site steadily settles.

Months 1-3

A portion of the transferred fat is reabsorbed during this period, the volume you see softens toward the lasting result. This is designed for: surgeons slightly overfill on the day knowing some will not survive.

Month 6

This is when the result is fairly judged. What remains now is essentially permanent. Some patients choose a second session to build volume further once everything has settled.

Things nobody tells you

The donor site frequently hurts more than the face does
Some of the transferred fat is meant to disappear, panicking at month two is premature by four months
Unlike filler there is no dissolving it, which is exactly why surgeon selection matters more here than anywhere

Recovery tips

Sleep with your head elevated for the first week, it makes a visible difference to morning swelling
Cold compresses near, not on, the grafted areas in the first days if your surgeon approves
Wear the compression garment on the donor area as directed, it is part of the result too
Plan your calendar around week two, that is when most people feel seen-in-public ready

What to avoid

Pressure on the grafted areas for two weeks: sleeping face-down, tight glasses on grafted temples, face massage
Strenuous exercise until cleared, usually two to three weeks
Nicotine in any form, graft survival depends on blood supply
Judging the volume in month one, some of what you see will be reabsorbed by design

Skin over any treated area turning white, dusky or blotchy purple, this is urgent
Any change in vision, treat as an emergency and seek care immediately

Why do I look so overfilled?

Deliberately. Your surgeon places more fat than the final result needs because a portion, often a third to a half, is reabsorbed in the first months. The puffiness of week one is not your outcome. The face you see at six months is.

When can I judge the result?

At about six months. Swelling clears over the first several weeks, then the surviving fat stabilizes over the months after that. What remains at six months is essentially permanent, and that is also the point where you and your surgeon would discuss a touch-up session if you want more volume.

Is the donor area supposed to hurt this much?

The liposuction site is often more sore than the face, and that surprises almost everyone. Bruising and tenderness there for one to two weeks is normal. Sudden one-sided swelling, spreading redness or fever is not, call your surgeon.
