What is MOXI?

MOXI is Sciton's gentle resurfacing laser. It treats the top layer of your skin without removing any of it, by heating thousands of microscopic spots and leaving the skin in between untouched, which is why you heal quickly.

It is cleared to treat sun spots, age spots, freckles and the rough scaly patches that come from years of sun, so it suits skin that looks blotchy, spotty or dull. It will not do much for wrinkles, loose skin or acne scars, and it is not cleared for them. If those are your main concern, ask your provider about a stronger laser like Halo or Fraxel instead.

A face session takes about 15 to 30 minutes. You will look sunburned for a few hours, slightly bronzed for a day or two, then speckled and flaky around days three to five as the treated skin sheds. Most people are back in makeup after a day. It is a short recovery, but it is not no recovery.

Sciton recommends 2 to 4 sessions, about a month apart, so the cost that matters is the course rather than one visit. Most practices discount a package booked up front.

MOXI is gentler than most lasers on deeper skin tones, because it heats the water in your skin instead of aiming at brown pigment. Results in the deepest skin tones are less well studied though, and the settings your provider chooses matter a great deal. If you have a deeper skin tone, ask what settings they plan to use on you and how they protect you from new dark patches afterwards.

LaseMD Ultra and the Perméa setting on Clear + Brilliant are the same kind of laser doing the same job. Which one you are offered usually comes down to which machine your provider owns.

Frequently asked questions

How much does MOXI cost in Atlanta?
MOXI in Atlanta typically costs $770 to $1,192 per session. Sciton recommends 2 to 4 treatments, so a course of three usually comes to about $2,310 to $3,575. Practices often price a package below the single-session rate. Atlanta offers a competitive mix of established practices and boutique studios, keeping prices close to the national median.
What is MOXI downtime really like?
Expect redness and heat on the day, often described as a bad sunburn. Over the next day or two the redness settles and the skin takes on a bronzed look. Around day two or three tiny dark speckles appear, which is treated skin working its way out, and the skin feels dry and rough. Those flake away over roughly days three to five. Some redness can linger up to a week depending on how strongly you were treated. Makeup is usually fine after 24 hours. It is a short recovery, but it is not no recovery.
What does MOXI actually treat?
Sun damage and uneven color, mainly. It is cleared to treat sun spots, age spots, freckles and the rough scaly patches that years of sun leave behind, and most patients say their skin looks brighter and more even afterwards. It is not a treatment for wrinkles, loose skin or acne scars. It works in the top layer of the skin, which is not deep enough to change those.
How is MOXI different from Halo?
Halo is the stronger of the two. It reaches the deeper layer of the skin and removes a little tissue as it goes, so it resurfaces more and the recovery is longer. MOXI stays in the top layer and removes nothing. Think of Halo as the bigger job and MOXI as the lighter treatment you repeat.
How many MOXI sessions will I need?
Sciton recommends 2 to 4 treatments, usually about a month apart. Some patients notice a change after one, but a single session should not be expected to do what a course does.
Is MOXI safe for darker skin tones?
It is one of the better tolerated lasers for deeper skin tones, because it heats the water in your skin instead of aiming at brown pigment. The research in the deepest skin tones is still limited to small studies though, and dark patches after any laser of this kind come partly from inflammation rather than from the laser hitting pigment. Ask your provider what settings they use and what they ask you to do before and after.
Can MOXI treat melasma?
This is a conversation for a clinician, not a web page. MOXI is used for melasma and there is some research behind it, but melasma comes back easily and heat can make it worse. If you are considering any laser for melasma, see a provider who will be honest with you about it returning.
Who should not have MOXI?
Postpone if you have an active skin infection or a cold sore in the area, a fresh tan or recent sun exposure, or a recent peel or laser treatment. Tell your provider about any medication that makes you sensitive to light, a history of keloid scarring, anything that affects how you heal, and any current or recent Accutane (isotretinoin). MOXI is put off during pregnancy and breastfeeding as a precaution, because nobody has studied it rather than because harm has been shown.
