What is a Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation treatment. A handpiece either sprays fine crystals or passes a diamond-tipped wand across the skin while gentle suction lifts away the outermost layer of dead cells. It is used for dull skin, rough texture, clogged pores and mild congestion, and it helps skincare and makeup sit better afterward.

It works on the surface of the skin only, which makes it a maintenance and glow treatment rather than a correction treatment. Most people do a short series every two to four weeks and then move to monthly upkeep.

It is not the same as dermabrasion, which is a deep surgical resurfacing procedure with weeks of recovery. It is also not a HydraFacial or DiamondGlow, which are wet systems that exfoliate and infuse serums at the same time, and it is not dermaplaning, which shaves away peach fuzz with a blade. Microdermabrasion is the dry, straightforward resurfacing option in that family, at the lowest price.

Frequently asked questions

How is microdermabrasion different from a HydraFacial?
Microdermabrasion is dry. It abrades the surface of the skin and vacuums away the dead cells. A HydraFacial is wet, so it exfoliates and extracts while pushing hydrating serums into the skin at the same time. If your skin runs dry or sensitive, the wet treatments are usually more comfortable. If you want straightforward resurfacing for texture and congestion, microdermabrasion does that at a lower price.
How many sessions will I need?
Most people are treated every two to four weeks for a short series, then move to monthly maintenance. You will see brighter, smoother skin after one session, but that result is temporary. This treatment rewards consistency rather than one dramatic appointment.
Will it help my acne scars or wrinkles?
Not meaningfully. Microdermabrasion works on the very top layer of skin, and both acne scarring and wrinkles sit deeper than that. For indented acne scars, ask about subcision, microneedling or fractional laser. For lines, ask about neuromodulators or resurfacing. Microdermabrasion can improve the surface look and feel of your skin alongside those treatments.
