What is a Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce breast size and alleviate symptoms including neck and back pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps, skin rashes under the breasts, and postural problems. It is often combined with a breast lift to reposition the nipple and reshape the breast.
Surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes 2 to 4 hours. Most patients return to light activity in 2 to 3 weeks and resume full exercise at 6 to 8 weeks. Results are long-lasting, though the breasts will continue to age naturally over time.
When breast reduction is performed primarily for medical reasons (documented back pain, skin rashes, nerve symptoms), insurance may cover a portion of the cost. Your surgeon can provide the documentation needed to submit a pre-authorization request.
How much does a Breast Reduction cost?
Breast reduction nationally typically starts at $7,000, with most procedures ranging from $7,000 to $16,000 all-in.

What to ask your provider
- Am I a candidate for insurance coverage? Do you have experience with insurance pre-authorization for breast reduction?
- Will my procedure include a lift to reposition the nipple, or just tissue removal?
- What size reduction should I expect, and will I be able to specify a target size?
- What incision pattern do you use, and where will my scars be?
- What does the quoted price include — surgeon fee, facility, anesthesia, and follow-up?
- How many breast reductions do you perform per year?
